Beside restful waters He leads me; He refreshes my soul.

HEART OF JESUS, SACRED TEMPLE OF GOD,
HAVE MERCY ON US.

Let's celebrate two saints today. On the Cistercian calendar is Blessed Guerric of Igny, on the Universal calendar Saint John Eudes. Heart of Jesus, delight of all the saints, have mercy on us.

The landowner in today's Gospel is confronted by some disgruntled workers, those grumbling because they worked longer hours than others and therefore think they deserve more pay (Mt 20:10-12). Oh, is that right, replies the landowner. "Am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?" (Mt 20:15). For further reflection, one can turn to St Benedict and Chapter 34 of the Holy Rule, "Distribution of Goods According to Need."

It is written: Distribution was made to each one as he had need (Acts 4:35). By this we do not imply that there should be favoritism-God forbid-but rather consideration for weaknesses. Whoever needs less should thank God and not be distressed, but whoever needs more should feel humble because of his weakness, not self-important because of the kindness shown to him. In this way all members will be at peace. First and foremost, there must be no word or sign of the evil of grumbling, no manifestation of it for any reason at all. If, however, anyone is caught grumbling, let him undergo more severe discipline.
(RB 34)

THE LAST WILL BE FIRST, AND THE FIRST WILL BE LAST.
(Mt 20:16)

The light of wisdom is kindled by frequent prayer, just as the light of knowledge is by frequent reading, provided that when you read you use a burning lamp, that is, justice in your deeds and devotion in your sentiments.
(Blessed Guerric of Igny)

He belongs to you, but more than that, He longs to be in you, living and ruling in you, as the head lives and rules in the body. He wants His breath to be in your breath, His heart in your heart, and His soul in your soul.
(Saint John Eudes)

BLESSED GUERRIC OF IGNY,
SAINT JOHN EUDES,
PRAY FOR US.
