Wednesday of the First Week of Lent

Saint Casimir (1458-1484)

Readings of the Day
RB: Ch 27 The Abbot's Concern for the Excommunicated
Mass: Jonah 3:1-10; Resp Ps 51; Lk 11:29-32

A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.

HEART OF JESUS, PATIENT AND MOST MERCIFUL,
HAVE MERCY ON US.

On the themes of vocation and a person's resistance to the grace of God, Fr Pietro Novati, director of the Roman Curia's annual Spiritual Exercises said this: "God is always at work to orient a person to a higher dimension of living, a more useful self-giving and service to our brothers and sisters."

As we relate Fr Pietro's words to our lives and today's readings, we, like Jonah, with his initial resistance to the word of Lord that came to him, try to flee the Lord in one way or another. Also like Jonah, we are called to change our course and set the bar higher for ourselves; to do the seemingly impossible and give of ourselves in service to our brothers and sisters.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, in your goodness, give us the strength and courage to continue the journey, even "when God calls in the midst of the hustle and bustle of life, even in moments of fatigue", for "these are the conditions for aspiring-even unconsciously-to a higher reality: that which God alone is capable of revealing and fulfilling" (Fr Novati).

JONAH BEGAN HIS JOURNEY THROUGH THE CITY ...
(Jn 3:4)

SAINT CASIMIR,
PRAY FOR US.
