MARY, QUEEN OF ALL SAINTS,
PRAY FOR US.

There is much to be said about the saint of the day, Pope Saint Paul VI. I will limit myself to two fun facts that inspire me. First, Pope Paul VI was a strong supporter of the monastic way of life with a devotion to Saint Benedict of Norcia. It was in his 1964 Apostolic Letter Pacis Nuntius Messenger of Peace, that Paul VI proclaimed St Benedict as the principal patron of Europe giving him the illustrious titles of messenger of peace, creator of unity, teacher of civility and above all the herald of the religion of Christ and the founder of western monasticism. One might respond with a "Woo-hoo"!

Second, it was 1976 that Pope Paul VI, shortly after he appointed Benedictine Abbot Basil Hume as Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, met with Cardinal Hume and gave this support and advice: "Always remain a monk." And Basil Hume did just that.

Now with inspiring words for all the faithful, from Pope Saint Paul VI in his 1974 address to what is now called the Pontifical Council for the Laity: "Modern man listens more readily to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses."

The last words of Jesus in today's Gospel are two: Follow me (Jn 21:19). We go forth and witness to peace, unity, civility, and the love of Christ Jesus poured into our hearts.

POPE SAINT PAUL VI,
SAINT BENEDICT,
PRAY FOR US.
