Wednesday of the Second Week of Easter

Blessed Maria Gabriella Sagheddu (1914-1939)
50th Earth Day

Readings of the Day
RB: Ch 65:1-10 The Prior or Prioress of the Monastery
Mass: Acts 5:17-26; Resp Ps 34; Jn 3:16-21

The Lord hears the cry of the poor.

HEART OF JESUS, FOUNTAIN OF LIFE AND HOLINESS,
HAVE MERCY ON US.

The line I underlined in my little missal last night was this: "The light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil" (Jn 3:19). Ouch. Then I read the summary of the Holy Father's homily for today when he reflected on those who choose darkness over light, those who are unable to live in the light because they have become accustomed to darkness. Pope Francis elaborates: "Light blinds them and they cannot see. They are like human bats: they can only move about during the night. We ourselves, when we are in a state of sin, find ourselves in this condition, unable to tolerate the light. It is easier to live in darkness; light slaps us on the face and shows us what we don't want to see." The pontiff leaves us with these questions to ponder: "Do I walk in the light or in darkness? Am I a child of God? Or have I ended up like a bat?"

Living and true God help us to not be like bats. After all, "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life" (Jn 3:16). May we children of the light. And Jesus did say: I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (Jn 8:12).

We pray with the Holy Father:

At this moment when unity is very necessary between ourselves and between nations, we pray today for Europe, so that Europe might succeed in creating this fraternal unity dreamt of by the founding fathers of the European Union.

BLESSED MARIA GABRIELLA SAGHEDDU,
PRAY FOR US.
