Monday after Epiphany

Saint Andre Bessette (1845-1937)

Readings of the Day
RB: Prol 39-44
Mass: Jn 3:22-4:6; Resp Ps 2; Mt 4:12-17, 23-35

Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice before him; with trembling rejoice.

Buona festa to Italians and those throughout the world who celebrate Epiphany today!

For Americans and others in the world, now in the days after Epiphany, Jesus gets busy in Galilee. After Jesus calls his first disciples (Mt 4:18-22), who also get busy and immediately follow the Lord, Jesus goes around Galilee and proclaims the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. He cures every disease and illness among the people (Mt 4:23). Jesus doesn't cure this disease or illness and not another. The Lord cures every one; he cures the "sick with various diseases and those racked with pain, those who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytics" (Mt 4:24). Jesus cured them. Jesus cures us too. He even heals us from what Pope Francis often calls things that "anesthetize the heart and confound the mind," any "useless things and addictions" (Twitter, January 6, 2020). Or other ills like the "the god of money, the god of consumerism, the god of pleasure, the god of success, the god of self" (Epiphany Homily, January 6, 2020). Great crowds are following Jesus (Mt 4:25). Are we among those in the crowd? Jesus, please heal us from whatever keeps us from following you.

SAINT ANDRE BESSETTE,
PRAY FOR US.
