Friday after Epiphany

Readings of the Day
RB: Ch2:1-10
Mass: 1 Jn 5:5-13; Resp Ps 147; Lk 5:12-16

Jesus would withdraw to deserted places to pray.

HEART OF JESUS, OUR PEACE AND OUR RECONCILIATION,
HAVE MERCY ON US.

Continuing the theme of loving one another (especially as found in our readings from the First Letter of Saint John), I keep thinking about some things Leonard Cohen (1934-2016) said in a 2001 interview I listened to the other day. Mr Cohen was being asked about the six years he spent in a Buddhist monastery near Los Angeles, on Mount Baldy. It was there that he learned, among other things, about what he called "the most self-less love". It was the love his teacher, Roshi, had for him. The love wasn't sentimental, it was impersonal. Roshi loved Leonard for who he really was, and not for what Leonard thought he was. Then Roshi, through a love of that kind, helped Leonard to locate who he really was. After pausing, Mr Cohen said, "Love is all overlooking. Overlook and forgive." Is this part of what unconditional love is? Jesus, please teach us to love.

Worship means bending low before the Most High and to discover in His presence that life's greatness does not consist in having, but loving.
