RB: Ch 29 The Readmission of Any Who Leave the Monastery
Mass: Rm 12:5-16ab; Resp Ps 131; Lk 14:15-24
A MAN GAVE A GREAT DINNER TO WHICH HE INVITED MANY … BUT ONE BY ONE, THEY ALL BEGAN TO EXCUSE THEMSELVES.
(Lk 14:16, 18)
In haste, I offer two voices on today's Gospel parable. First, the proclamation used at our Evening Prayer, from Isaac of Stella (1100-1169), Cistercian monk, abbot of Stella, theologian and philosopher: "Some make five yoke of oxen a pretense for not coming to the feast, the feast in which poverty becomes plentitude, want becomes satiety, and the last place becomes the first. There lowliness is transformed into greatness and labor into repose."
Second, Pope Francis, from his homily this morning at Casa Santa Marta: Let us think about this parable the Lord tells us today. Do I always accept the invitation of the Lord or close myself off in my interests, in my smallness? And let us ask the Lord for the grace always to accept to go to His feast, which is free.
LET LOVE BE SINCERE; HATE WHAT IS EVIL, HOLD ON TO WHAT IS GOOD; LOVE ONE ANOTHER WITH MUTUAL AFFECTION; ANTICIPATE ONE ANOTHER IN SHOWING HONOR. DO NOT GROW SLACK IN ZEAL, BE FERVENT IN SPIRIT, SERVE THE LORD.
(Rm 12:9-11)
