Saturday of the Second Week of Lent

Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo (1538-1606)

Readings of the Day
RB: Ch 43:13-19
Mass: Micah 7:14-15, 18-20; Resp Ps 103; Lk 15:1-3, 11-32

The Lord is kind and merciful.

I think about the father in the today's Gospel, his reaction to his two sons, and the hearts of all three of them. The younger son, after squandering his inheritance on a life of dissipation, returns home. His father doesn't ask him where he's been or if he has any money left. Rather, the father sees his son, is filled with compassion, runs to him and embraces and kisses him. Even after the son admits his sin, the father doesn't scold him. All the father wants to do is celebrate with food, music and dancing. Then there is the older son who is so angry with his father for accepting his brother's return that he won't even enter the house. The father doesn't scold this son either. The father goes out to him and pleads: 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours.' It may be that the unconditional love, mercy, and compassion of the father helped turn the hearts of both sons and bring them to life. That is even more reason to celebrate and rejoice.

The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in mercy. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures.
