Readings of the Day
RB: Prol 8-13
Mass: 1 Cor 3:1-9; Resp Ps 33; Lk 4:38-44
From heaven the Lord looks down; He sees all mankind.
GOD THE SON, REDEEMER OF THE WORLD,
HAVE MERCY ON US.
One of the things I like about Simon's mother-in-law in today's Gospel scene is her get up and go. There she was afflicted with a severe fever. After those gathered intercede on her behalf, Jesus goes to work. The Divine Healer stands over her, rebukes the fever, and it goes. The strong woman gets up immediately and waits on those gathered. She got on with it (Lk 4:38-39). So should we. No matter what. Saint Teresa of Calcutta has this to say: "We are at Jesus' disposal. If He wants you sick in bed, if He wants you to clean toilets all day, that's all right, everything is all right. We must say, 'I belong to you. You can do whatever you like.' And this is our strength. This is the joy of the Lord." Or as Saint Benedict, referring to Saint John, puts it in today's reading from the Holy Rule:
Run while you have the light of life
, that the darkness of death
may not overtake you (RB Prol 13).
We keep going and carry on the work of redemption, for "we are God's co-workers" (1 Cor 3:9).
