Readings of the Day

RB: Ch 7:60-61

Mass: 2 Cor 3:4-11; Resp Ps 99; Mt 5:17-19

Holy is the Lord, our God.

JESUS, ETERNAL WISDOM,
HAVE MERCY ON US.

In today's Gospel, Jesus tells us that whoever obeys and teaches His commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven (Mt 5:19). Everyday Jesus tells us to love one another as He loves us. By this, says Our Lord, all will know that we are His disciples, if we have love for one another (Jn 13:34-35). And it doesn't necessarily take a lot of words to obey the Lord's commandments, teach them to others, and to love one another. So we turn to Saint Benedict, now on the eleventh step of humility: "The eleventh step of humility is that a monk speaks gently and without laughter, seriously and with becoming modesty, briefly and reasonably, but without raising his voice, as it is written: 'A wise man is known by his few words'" (RB 7:60-61).

Lord, shed your light upon our darkened souls the brilliant light of your wisdom so that we may be enlightened and serve you with renewed purity.
(From a sermon by Saint Ephrem, deacon, in Office of Readings, June 9)

SAINT EPHRAEM,
SAINT COLUMBA,
SAINT JOSE DE ANCHIETA,
SAINT JOSEPH,
PRAY FOR US.
