Buona domenica!

Today's celebration is "not just about migrants", Pope Francis tells us, "it's about all of us, about the human family, called to build together a world more in accord with God's plan" (Twitter, September 29, 2019). In his homily this morning, the Holy Father elaborated: it's about "all those in existential peripheries, who together with migrants and refugees, are victims of the throwaway culture." What then is the Lord asking of us? Pope Francis continues, "The Lord calls us to restore their humanity, as well as our own, and to leave no one behind." Some ways to leave no one behind are found in today's readings. Let us not be "complacent". Rather, may we continue to "pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness." Reach out to someone who may be on the periphery, the one standing or "lying at the door". It may help to recall a time when you were on the periphery. I was thinking about times when I have been on the periphery at a new place of work, in the classroom, in a community, parish, or any long-standing social group. There are certain people I can think of who made an effort to welcome me into the midst of the others, to receive me, introduce me to others, or simply to extend a smile. These are some ways we might build together a world more in accord with God's plan. The Lord loves the just; the Lord protects strangers (Ps 146).

BY THIS WE CAME TO KNOW THE LOVE OF GOD; THAT CHRIST LAID DOWN HIS LIFE FOR US; SO THAT WE OUGHT TO LAY DOWN OUR LIVES FOR ONE ANOTHER.
(Communion Antiphon, Mass)
