Thursday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Saints: The First Martyrs of the of the Holy Roman Church

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 23 Excommunication for Faults

Mass: Amos 7:10-17; Resp Ps 19; Mt 9:1-8

Giving wisdom to the simple.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.
MARY, QUEEN OF MARTYRS,
PRAY FOR US.

Let your "Yes" mean "Yes," and your "No" mean "No."
Anything more is from the evil one.
(Mt 5:37)

Welcome to the last day of the month of June dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. And on this day we commemorate our first martyrs who gave their lives for the faith. Heart of Jesus, strength of martyrs, have mercy on us.

When things get rough today, look to Jesus in today's Gospel: Courage, child .... Rise and walk (Mt 9:2,5). Yes, our sins are forgiven. United in faith and prayer, we go forth.

Let us put aside empty vain cares, and let us come to the glorious and venerable rule of our tradition, and let us see what is good and pleasing and acceptable in the sight of our Maker. Let us fix our gaze on the Blood of Christ, and let us know that it is precious to His Father because it was poured out for our salvation and it brought the grace of repentance to all the world.
(From a letter of Pope Saint Clement I to the Corinthians, in Office of Readings, June 29)

Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 22 The Sleeping Arrangements of the Monks

Mass: Acts 12:1-11; Resp Ps 34; 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18; Mt 16:13-19

Glorify the Lord with me.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.
MARY, QUEEN OF APOSTLES,
PRAY FOR US.

You are Christ, the Son of the living God.
(Mt 16:16)

Happy Solemnity of the glorious Apostles Peter and Paul. Most comforting words come in Saint Paul's words from his second letter to Saint Timothy: "The Lord stood by me and gave me strength. The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen" (2 Tm 4:17, 18). With this in mind and heart, we go forth, united in faith and prayer, so that we may one day proclaim with Saint Paul, "I have finished the race; I have kept the faith" (2 Tm 4:7). Heart of Jesus, full of goodness and love, have mercy on us.

This day has been consecrated for us by the martyrdom of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul. It is not some obscure martyrs we are talking about. Their sound has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. These martyrs have seen what they proclaimed, they pursued justice by confessing the truth, by dying for the truth ...
We are celebrating a feast day, consecrated for us by the blood of the apostles Let us love their faith, their lives, their labors, their sufferings, their confession of faith, their preaching.
(From a sermon by Saint Augustine, in Office of Readings, June 29)

SAINT PETER AND SAINT PAUL, APOSTLES,

(Mt 8:26)

Call on Jesus today; He, the One who calms all storms. Yes, even the winds and sea obey Him.  O God, come to my assistance, O Lord, make haste to help me. I believe, help my unbelief. Heart of Jesus, source of all consolation, have mercy on us.

The glory of God gives life; those who see God receive life ...
Life in man is the glory of God; the life of man is the vision of God.
(From the treatise "Against the Heresies" by Saint Ireneaus, in Office of Readings, June 28)

Saints: Saint Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop, Doctor (370-444); Saint John Southworth (1592?-1654); Our Lady of Perpetual Succour; Blessed Nykyta Budka (1877-1949); Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky (1903-1973)

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 20 Reverence in Prayer

Mass:  Amos 2:6-10; Resp Ps 50; Mt 8:18-22

Consider this, you who forget God.

MARY, MOTHER OF GOD,
PRAY FOR US.
MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

This is the way; walk in it.
(Isaiah 30:21)

Welcome to Monday, our favorite day of the week. Since we have several saints to intercede for us today, we pray, Heart of Jesus, delight of all the saints, have mercy on us.

Yesterday we had a voice in the crowd boldly telling Jesus, "I will follow you wherever you go" (Lk 9:57). Today, a scribe approaches Jesus and declares: "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go" (Mt 8:19). Are you ready to follow Our Lord too? Or on this Monday, perhaps our "Yes", needs another "Yes." United in faith and prayer and mutually supportive, we listen to Jesus then: Follow me, and let the dead bury the dead (8:22). We go forth, with no turning back.

Never say to God: "Enough"; simply say, "I am ready."
(Blessed Sebastian Valfre, 1629-1710)

SAINT JOHN SOUTHWORTH,
OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL SUCCOUR,
BLESSED MYKYTA BUDKA,

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love" Concludes

Last day of the 10th World Meeting of Families "Family Love: A Vocation and Path to Holiness"

In other years: Blessed Mary Josephine Catanea (1894-1948)

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 19 The Discipline of the Psalmody

Mass: 1 Kgs 19:16b, 19-21; Resp Ps 16; Gal 5:1, 13-18; Lk 9:51-62

With Him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

Follow me.
(Lk 9:59)

An anonymous "someone" in today's Gospel says to Jesus: "I will follow you wherever you go" (Lk 9: 57). May that someone be each one of us. And may we really mean it. Otherwise, as Jesus said: No one sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God (Lk 9:62). Heart of Jesus, the way, the truth and the life, have mercy on us. Help us to live by the Spirit (Gal. 5:16) and follow You wherever You go, resolutely.

Do not be daunted immediately by fear and run away from the road that leads to salvation. It is bound to be narrow at the outset.
(Rule of Saint Benedict, Prologue 48)

Not to preach the Gospel would be my undoing, for Christ Himself sent me as apostle and witness ...
I never cease to speak of Christ for He is our truth and our light; He is the way, the truth and the life. He is our bread, our source of living water who allays our hunger and satisfies our thirst. He is our shepherd, our leader, our ideal, our comforter and our brother ...
Remember: [it] is Jesus Christ I preach day in and day out. His name I will see echo and reecho for all time even to the ends of the earth.
(From a homily by Pope Paul VI in Office of Readings, Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time)

When one follows, the way cannot be lonely. despite its dangers and uncertainties. When one follows, at least two are involved. What is demanded of the disciple is not brilliance, moral perfection, or knowledge of the way, but fidelity and courage.
(Erasmo Leiva Merikakis in Fire of Mercy: Heart of the Word: Meditations on the Gospel According to St. Matthew)

We must be disciples of Jesus in earnest, with real determination and not, -as an elderly lady I knew used to say-"rosewater Christians". No, no, no! [We must be] serious Christians.
(Pope Francis, Angelus Address, June 26, 2022)

BLESSED MARY JOSEPHINE CATANEA,
PRAY FOR US.

From the Lord's saying: Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God, we learn that blessedness does not lie in knowing something about God, but rather as possessing God within oneself.

The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love"

10th World Meeting of Families through June 26, 2022 "Family Love: A Vocation and Path to Holiness"

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 18:12-19 The Order of the Psalmody

Mass: Ezk 34:11-16; Resp Ps 23; Rm 5:5b-11; Lk 15:3-7

He refreshes my soul.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

The love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
(Rm 5:5b)

It is a beautiful day, this Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. May Jesus say about us, what He said about Saint Gertrude the Great of Helfta (1256-1301/2): I live in the heart of Gertrude. Heart of Jesus, king and center of all hearts, have mercy on us.

Two [favors] which I mention in particular. They are the seal on my heart with those brilliant jewels which are Your salvific wounds, and the wound of love with which You manifestly and efficaciously transfixed by heart ...
In addition to these favors, You have granted me the priceless gift of Your familiar friendship, giving me in various ways, to my indescribable delight, the noblest treasure of Your divinity, Your divine heart, now as a sign of our mutual familiarity, exchanging it with mine.
(Saint Gertrude the Great, The Herald of Divine Love, Book II, Ch. 23)

I need nothing but God, and to lose myself in the heart of God.
(Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque)

A Christian has a union with Jesus Christ more noble, more intimate and more perfect than the members of a human body have with their head.
He longs to be in you, He wants His breath to be your breath, His heart in your heart, and His soul in your soul.

Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love"

10th World Meeting of Families through June 26, 2022 "Family Love: A Vocation and Path to Holiness"

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 18:7-11 The Order of the Psalmody

Mass: Is 49:1-9; Resp Ps 139; Acts 13:22-26; Lk 1:57-66, 80

You understand my thoughts from afar.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
(Lk 1:80)

Welcome to the first of two days in a row! of Solemnities celebrated in our Church. Today we have the joy of celebrating the Nativity of John the Baptist, the infant who leaped in the womb of his mother Elizabeth, when Elizabeth heard her cousin Mary's greeting (Lk 1:41). We have the privilege too of honoring John the Baptist twice during the liturgical year. Today we commemorate his birth and on August 29 we commemorate his death. Fitting it is, as reminded, for Jesus said this about John: I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John (Lk 7:28). Jesus also had this to say: Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he (Lk 7:28).

John knew of his great responsibility as the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of Lord" (Jn 1:23). At the same time, John knew that there was one coming after him, One whose sandal strap John was not worthy to untie (Jn 1:27). With this and more, I think of something Cardinal Basil Hume said when commenting on a lesson in humility he learned in his years as schoolmaster.

As a schoolmaster I learned a very important truth. Looking after boys which was my task, I discovered that every boy between the ages of thirteen and eighteen (which was the age range in which I operated) was in some manner superior to me. He was something I could not be or he could do something which I couldn't do-even if it was only fixing a television set.
(B. Hume in Cardinal Basil Hume: In My Own Words, ed. T. de Bertodano, p. 83)

Heart of Jesus, source of strength, wisdom, and humility, have mercy on us.

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 18:1-6 The Order of the Psalmody

In Your justice, give me life.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

By their fruits you will know them.
(Mt 7:20)

Beware of false prophets (Mt 7:15), says the Lord. We pray, then, as Saint Benedict instructs us at the beginning of Chapter 18 of the Holy Rule, the way each of the day hours of the Divine Office begins: O God, come to my assistance; Lord, make haste to help me, followed by giving honor and reverence to the Holy Trinity, "Glory be to the Father ..." (RB 18:1). Heart of Jesus, enriching all who invoke Thee, have mercy on us.

Comfort in tribulation can be secured only on the sure ground of faith holding as true the words of Scripture and the teaching of the Catholic Church.
(Saint Thomas More)

I will not mistrust [God], though I shall feel myself weakening and on the verge of being overcome with fear ... I trust He shall place His holy hand on me and in the stormy seas hold me up from drowning.

Tuesday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love"

Saints: Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (1568-1591); Saint John Rigby (1570-1600)

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 17 The Number of Psalms to be Sung at These Hours

Mass: 2 Kgs 19:9b-11, 14-21, 31-35a, 36; Resp Ps 48; Mt 7:6, 12-14

Great is the Lord and holy to be praised.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

Welcome to the Summer Solstice. In Your light we see light. It is said that one of our saints of the day, Saint Aloysious Gonzaga sought solace in daily prayer to Mary, beginning at the age of seven. And he joined the Society of Jesus as the age of 16 or 17. May Saint Aloysious Gonzaga intercede for all Jesuits. Ad maiorem Dei gloriam For the greater glory of God!

We are given another clear command by Jesus today. You will recognize it as the Golden Rule: Do to others whatever you would have them do to you (Mt 7:12). Jesus, meek and humble of heart, have mercy on us.

Meekness was the method of Jesus used with the apostles. He put up with their ignorance and roughness and even their infidelity. He treated sinners with a kindness and affection that caused some to be shocked, others to be scandalized, and still others to gain hope in God's mercy. Thus He bade us to be gentle and humble of heart.

Monday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love"

Saints: Saints Alban, Julius and Aaron, early Christian martyrs; The Irish Martyrs (16th-17th century)

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 16 The Celebration of the Divine Office During the Day

Mass: 2 Kgs 17:5-8, 13-15a, 18; Resp Ps 60; Mt 7:1-5

Help us with your right hand, O Lord, and answer us.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

Welcome back to Monday, this one the day before the Summer Solstice, in the month of June dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and in the last week of the Year of the Family. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow! Heart of Jesus, Son of the Eternal Father, have mercy on us.

Enough for today are the first and last lines of Jesus in today's Gospel. They are pretty clear. Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged ...remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother's eye (Mt 7:1-2, 5)

Since, by the goodness of God, we who are called "Christians" have been granted the honor of sharing this name, the greatest, the highest, the most sublime of all names, it follows that each of the titles that express its meaning should be clearly reflected in us. If we are not to lie when we call ourselves "Christians," we must bear witness to it by our way of living.

Father's Day

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 15 The Times for Saying Alleluia

Mass: Genesis 14:18-20; Resp Ps 110; 1 Cor 11:23-26; Sequence (Lauda Sion); Lk 9:11b-17

Bring Him all the praise you know.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,
you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.
(1 Cor 11:26)

Happy Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.

As we continue to pray for the peace the world cannot give, we look to the Sequence Laud, O Zion and pray: And His rule for guidance taking, Bread and wine we hallow, making Thus our sacrifice of peace. Lord, I am not worthy that you enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.  Heart of Jesus, bread of life, have mercy on us.

O precious and wonderful banquet, that brings us salvation and contains all sweetness! Could anything be of more intrinsic value? ... What could be more wonderful than this? No other sacrament has greater healing power; through it sins are purged away, virtues are increased, and the soul is enriched with an abundance of every spiritual gift.

Saturday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love"

Saturday Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 14 The Celebration of Vigils on the Anniversaries of Saints

Mass: 2 Chronicles 24:17-25; Resp Ps 89; Mt 6:24-34

Forever I will maintain my love for my servant.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

Heart of Jesus, formed by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mother,
have mercy on us.

With Jesus' closing words in today's Gospel, Our Lord tells us not to worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil (Mt 6:34). If you do have worries, take them to His blessed Mother. She will help you.

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life our sweetness and our hope.
 to thee do we cry,
 poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this our exile
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary.

With you
have been hidden the unfailing treasures
of truth and grace
of peace and pity
of salvation and wisdom
of glory and honor.
(Adam of Perseigne, 1145-1221, Cistercian monk and abbot in Mary Most Holy: Meditating with the Early Cistercians)

There is no danger in loving Mary too much ... because all that we entrust to the Lady, Jesus receives with increase ... loving Mary, we love God, and it takes nothing from Him, but does altogether the opposite.
(Blessed Rafael Arnaiz Baron, in G.M. Fernandez, God Alone, p. 87)

MARY, MOTHER OF HOPE,
PRAY FOR US.

Friday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love"

Saint: Blessed Marie-Joseph Cassant, Cistercian monk and priest (1878-1903); Saint Botolph (7th century)

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 13:12-14 The Celebration of Lauds on Ordinary Days

Mass: 2 Kgs 11:1-4, 9-18, 20; Resp Ps 132; Mt 6:19-23

He prefers her for His dwelling.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

In a letter sent to his parents about a month before he died, one of our saints of the day, Blessed Marie-Joseph Cassant, Cistercian monk and priest, began in this way: "Everything for the heart of Jesus!" And Blessed Marie-Joseph closed the letter with this "I end with the wish that we always be one in the Heart of Jesus, on earth as in heaven" (23 December 1902/24 May 1903). The young monk embraced what Jesus teaches us in today's Gospel, namely, he stored up his treasures in heaven. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be (Mt 6:21), says the Lord. Heart of Jesus, house of God and gate of heaven, have mercy on us.

SAINT BOTOLPH,

Thursday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love"

Saints: Saint Lutgardis of Aywieres, Cistercian Virgin (1182-1246); Saint Richard of Chichester (1197-1253)

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 13:1-11 The Celebration of Lauds on Ordinary Days

Mass: Sirach 48:1-14; Resp Ps 97; Mt 6:7-15

The heavens proclaim His justice.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

The Church is buzzing with the Lord's Prayer today. It is fitting and right, as we know, for Saint Thomas Aquinas teaches us that the Lord's Prayer is the most perfect prayer. It contains all we need.

First, Jesus teaches us not to babble. Instead, Our Lords says, This is how you are to pray (Mt 6:9):

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed by Thy name,
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Second, in the Office of Readings this week, we have been learning from the bishop and martyr Saint Cyprian (210-258) in his treatise on the Lord's Prayer. With "the words: and forgive us our trespasses", he writes, we are "reminded that we are sinners and forced to ask forgiveness for our faults is prudent and sound. Even while we are asking God's forgiveness, our hearts are aware of our state! This command to pray daily for our sins reminds us that we commit sin every day. No one should complacently think himself innocent, lest his pride lead to further sin" (Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time, Thursday).

Third, in the Holy Rule of Saint Benedict, we are immersed in the chapters on the liturgical code, that is, instructions on praying the Divine Office, the number of psalms to be prayed, at what time of the liturgical year, on what days of the week, and so on. Our holy father Benedict (c. 480-547) tells us that "the celebration of Lauds and Vespers must never pass by without the superior's reciting the entire Lord's Prayer at the end for all to hear, because thorns of contention are likely to spring up" (Rule of Saint Benedict, 13:12).

Fourth, one of our saints of day, Richard of Chichester, when Bishop of Chichester (1197-1253), made sure the faithful knew by heart the Lord's Prayer, and the Hail Mary and Creed too.

And if that's not enough, one can always turn to our Catechism of the Catholic Church and read an excellent commentary on the Lord's Prayer in Part IV on Christian Prayer, paragraphs 2759-2865. It is there that we learn that "The Lord's Prayer 'is truly the summary of the whole gospel'" (CCC 2761).

The torch has been passed. It's up to us to carry it forward. Pray the Lord's Prayer today. Teach it to your children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and whoever else too. 😊 Soon the world may be buzzing with the Lord's prayer. United in faith and prayer, we go forth.

SAINT LUTGARDIS OF AYWIERES,
SAINT RICHARD OF CHICHESTER,
PRAY FOR US.

Wednesday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love"

Saints: Blessed Peter Snow and Ralph Grimson (16th century)

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 12 The Celebration of the Solemnity of Lauds

Mass: 2 Kgs 2:1, 6-14; Resp Ps 31; Mt 6:1-6, 16-18

Love the Lord, all you faithful ones.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

Place your hope in God alone.
(Rule of Saint Benedict, 4:41)

Let your hearts take comfort, all who hope in the Lord.
(Psalm 31)

In this month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we can turn to the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus approved by Pope Leo XIII in 1899 for an invocation, or, it seems fitting that we can make up our own invocation. In relation to today's Gospel, I offer this one: Heart of Jesus, meek and humble, have mercy on us. As Jesus tells us, Your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you (Mt 6:18).

We should live like temples of God we are, so that it can be seen that God lives in us.
(From a treatise on the Lord's Prayer by Saint Cyprian, in Office of Readings, Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time, Wednesday)

Thoroughly wash me from my guilt.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
(Mt 5:44)

Jesus' words above, and Father Gabriele's prayer below should keep us busy enough as we commemorate Blessed Gerard of Clairvaux. After all, we want to be children of our heavenly Father, for He makes His sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust (Mt 5:45). Heart of Jesus, abode of justice and love, have mercy on us.

I want to forgive all those who have offended me. Look to those inner sores that make me unable to forgive. You who came to forgive the afflicted of heart, please, heal my own heart.
(Father Gabriele Amorth, d. 2016, who was the Chief Exorcist of Rome, Italy)

BLESSED GERARD OF CLAIRVAUX,
SAINT DAVNET,
SAINT LIDWINA,
SAINT ELISHA,

(Mt 5:41-42)

Welcome to Monday. 😊 Jesus' words above and Saint Anthony of Padua's below should keep us busy enough. United in faith and prayer, we keep going. And if you can't seem to find something, ask Saint Anthony of Padua to help. He comes through.

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love"

World Day Against Child Labor

In other years: Saint Onuphrius (d.400); Blessed Alphonsus Mazurek and Companions (19th-20th century); Blessed Hilary Januszewski (1907-1945);

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 9 The Number of Psalms at the Night Office

Mass: Pr 8:22-31; Resp Ps 8; Rom 5:1-5; Jn 16:12-15

O Lord, Our God, how wonderful Your name in all the earth!

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through Our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in the glory of God.
(Rm 5:1-2)

So fitting that we are presented with Saint Benedict's Chapter 9 on this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. It is there that we read our holy father Benedict's instructions: "As soon as the cantor begins to sing 'Glory be to the Father,' let all the monks rise from their seats in honor and reverence for the Holy Trinity" (Rule of Saint Benedict, 9:7). Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Holy Trinity, One God, have mercy on us.

You, who are three in one substance, the one God,
from whom we are,
by whom we are,
in whom we are,

You, from whom we departed by sinning,
to whom we were made unlike,
but away from whom we have not been allowed to perish,

You, the beginning, to whom we are returning,
the pattern we are following,
the grace by which we are reconciled,

You, we worship and bless!

To You, be glory for ever! Amen.
(William of St. Thierry, 1085-1148, On Contemplating God)

SAINT ONUPHRIUS,
BLESSED ALPHONSUS MAZUREK AND COMPANIONS,
BLESSED HILARY JANUSZEWSKI,
PRAY FOR US.

Saint: Saint Barnabas the Apostle and Martyr

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 8 The Divine Office at Night

Mass: Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3; Resp Ps 98; Mt 10:7-13 or Mt 5:33-37

He has done wondrous deeds.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
MARY, QUEEN OF MARTYRS,
PRAY FOR US.

Heart of Jesus, hope of those who die in Thee,
have mercy on us.

Welcome to Saturday, this one the day before we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. As we prepare then, may our "Yes" mean "Yes" and our "No" mean "No." Anything more is from the Evil One (Mt 5:37). The Kingdom of heaven is at hand (Mt 10:7). United in faith and prayer, Blessed Rafael Arnaiz Baron can inspire us.

I want to occupy myself with only one thing: loving God; with that alone.
(Blessed Rafael Arnaiz Baron in G.M. Fernandez, God Alone, p. 57)

SAINT BARNABAS THE APOSTLE AND MARTYR,
PRAY FOR US.

Today's photo: More beauty clothed in martyr red to commemorate Saint Barnabas the Apostle and Martyr. When I typed Saint Barnabas the Apostle and Martyr yesterday, it occurred to me that Apostle implies martyrdom. Pick up your cross and follow me, says the Lord. Friday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time

Year of the Family "Amoris Laetitia The Joy of Love"

Saint: Blessed Edward Poppe (d. 1924)

Readings of the Day

Rule of Saint Benedict: Ch 7:62-70 Humility

Mass: 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-16; Resp Ps 27; Mt 5:27-32

Of you my heart speaks; you my glance seeks.

MARY, QUEEN OF PEACE,
PRAY FOR US.

Shine like lights in the world, as you hold onto the word of life.
Alleluia. Alleluia.
(Gospel acclamation, Mass)

There are a couple of things I read within the last 24 hours that brought a smile to my face. The first is a remark about silence, from Blessed Rafael Arnaiz Baron. It may help us as we conclude Saint Benedict's chapter 7 on humility and continue to ascend the steps of humility. On silence, then, Rafael said, "Brother, do not make noise, I am speaking with God" (God Alone: A Spiritual Biography of Blessed Rafael Arnaiz Baron, p. 42). Heart of Jesus, our peace and reconciliation, have mercy on us.

The second comes from the second reading in today's Office of Readings. It appears this week, in these days when the psalms have been coming through loud and clear. As often is the case, the one prayed fits the mood or emotional state. It started early this week when we began with Psalm 39, the psalmist singing too about silence and humility: "I said, 'I will watch my ways, lest I sin with my tongue, I will set a curb on my mouth ..." (Ps 39:2). It is true what Saint Augustine says about the psalms.

Though all Scripture is fragrant with God's grace. the Book of Psalms has a special attractiveness ...
In the Book of Psalms there is profit for all, with healing power for our salvation ... All who read it may find the cure for their own individual failings. All with eyes to see can discover in it a complete gymnasium for the soul, a stadium for all virtues, equipped for every kind of exercise; it is for each to choose the kind he judges best to help him gain the prize.
(From the explanations of the Psalms by Saint Ambrose, bishop, in Office of Readings, Tenth Week in Ordinary Time, Friday)

Look then to the Book of Psalms, for, "in one short reading you can amass a treasure for the memory ... you will find the glory of charity more than a match for the parade of power" (Saint Augustine). So as we did this morning, we sing with one of my favorite psalms: Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name give the glory because of your faithfulness and love ... Those who fear the Lord trust in the Lord, who is their help and their shield (Ps 115:1,11).

Now, therefore, after ascending all these steps of humility, the monk will quickly arrive at that perfect love of God which casts out fear. Through this love, all that he once performed with dread, he will now begin to observe without effort, as though naturally, from habit, no longer out of fear of hell, but out of love for Christ, good habit and delight in virtue, All this the Lord will by the Holy Spirit graciously manifest in his workman now cleansed of vices and sins.
(Rule of Saint Benedict, 7:67-70)

BLESSED EDWARD POPPE,
PRAY FOR US.

Today's photo: Some beauty comes in pairs. Hear, O Lord, the sound of my call. Dear faithful reader, Mr. JA. Why not consider sending along a photo of one of your favorite flowers seen while walking ... United in faith and prayer, thank you for being there.

(1 Kgs 18:39)

Christ the Teacher is busy teaching us these days in His Sermon on the Mount, through the lens of Chapter 5 of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew. We pray then, that we can obey and teach His commandments so as to be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven (Mt 5:19). And the greatest of these commandments is love. Heart of Jesus, fountain of life and holiness, have mercy on us.

May your healing work, O Lord
free us, we pray, from doing evil
and lead us to what is right.
